Here is your complete guide for Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland or Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World! This post includes tips and tricks that apply to the attraction on both coasts plus a FAQ’s section. If the process changes or is modified I will update this post. *Post updated 2-1-21
The much anticipated ride, Rise of the Resistance (ROTR) opened Jan 17, 2020 at Disneyland. Similar to Hollywood Studios in Orlando, you have to join a boarding group (a virtual line queue) if you want to go on this ride. There is no FastPass or long line to wait in. If you don’t get in a boarding group you don’t ride. Read more about how to join a group below. For the Walt Disney World guests read the Hollywood Studios section further down too for additional tips that apply to that park only.
Download the Disneyland app!
First step you must download the Disneyland app. Do this before you arrive and create an account if you don’t already have one. Next scan your park tickets into the app for everyone in your party. You can do this before you arrive if you have your tickets or annual passes. Remove anyone from your app that will not be with you on the day you want to get a boarding group. And if you have AFTER DARK party tickets in your app I would call 714-781-4636 and have them removed just for the day you’re going.
Arrival tips and information
I have a lot of great tips and information about arriving over on this post. You can read more about the parking structures and where they are located and what time they open. Allow yourself enough time to park, go through security and the line at the gates to get inside the parks. The lines can get very long especially on the weekends and holidays. Arrive at the parking structure an hour before the park opens to ensure you have plenty of time.
Helpful tips to join a boarding group!
On the morning you arrive at the park as soon as you scan your ticket into the park open the app and make sure all of the tickets for your party are in the app. Otherwise add the tickets to your app. Find a cast member if you’re unsure how to do this. Be sure to remove any tickets on your app for people who are not in the park with you on the day you want to get a boarding group. Even if they are not with you their ticket will show up when you go to join a boarding group and you will have to take the time to uncheck them from your group. Those few seconds removing them could keep you from getting in a boarding group.
Now you have to wait until the park officially opens to actually join a boarding group in the app. Make sure you know the official park opening hours before you go. DO NOT join the Disneyland WIFI it’s slow. From this point on it’s kind of like the lottery, a game of chance. Whoever has the fastest fingers and secures a boarding group faster gets on the rides. Find a location with good internet service. Be ready to refresh the app just before the park officially opens. Open the home page in the app and you will see “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – access by boarding group.” Click on the Find out More button (as shown in photo below on left side). The next window will have “My Status” and “Join a Boarding Group”, it will be grey (as shown in photo below on the right side). Get to that point and be ready to count down the seconds to opening.
As soon as your phone says 8 a.m. (or whatever time the park opens) click the now red-orange “Join Boarding Group” (as shown in photo below on the left side). If you get an error message just keep trying until it goes through. On the next screen make sure everyone in your party is included and get your boarding group number on the last screen (as shown in photo below on the right side).
Note that your entire party must be inside Disneyland to be added to a boarding group. Once you are assigned you can’t add a member. So make sure everyone is in the park if you plan to go on the ride together! There has been conflicting information on whether everyone in your party should try to get a boarding group or if just one person should try. We all tried in my group until one of us was successful. We figured the more phones that are trying the greater your chances. I have heard from so many people that had multiple people in their group try and they were successful as well. I will leave that choice up to you but if you want to read comments on a recent Instagram post where people shared how they got their groups head over here.
Once you have been assigned to a boarding group, which is really a virtual queue it’s not a physical line, then you can enjoy the rest of Disneyland. You can even hop over to DCA or back to your hotel until it’s your turn to experience Rise of the Resistance.
You will receive a push notification in the official Disneyland app when your boarding group is up (see photo below bottom left). There will also be digital signs throughout the park (top right). The app will keep you updated on which boarding group they are currently taking (top left). After you are notified that it’s your boarding groups time you will have 1 hour to make your way to the ride. No need to hop out of a line you’re currently in. The app will tell you what time you have to return to board the ride (bottom right).
Once all the boarding groups are assigned guests may be assigned to a “backup” boarding group. You will receive a notification in the app like this one.
Backup boarding groups are only called if all previous boarding groups have been called and there is extra capacity for additional guests. This varies from day to day. I was in a backup group on the second day the ride was open and was able to go on the ride. But the next day the ride broke down so much they were not able to accommodate the backup groups.
- Height restriction 40 in or taller
- DAS is offered, you must join a boarding group after you enter the park just like everyone else. Then once your boarding group is called you can go to any guest services kiosk to get a return time.
- Rider switch is available for this attraction. Tell the cast member when you enter the line you would like to utilize this option and they will help you.
- There is NO single rider at this time for ROTR.
- Expectant mothers should not ride.
- FastPass and MaxPass are not offered on either ride inside Galaxy’s Edge at this time. I will update when that changes.
- If you get motion sickness on rides like Star Tours, Smugglers Run or Flight of Passage (in Animal Kingdom) don’t worry you will be fine on this ride. I normally get a little nauseous but I was fine on this new attraction.
- There is a short drop on the ride. It happens so quickly and there’s so much going on to distract you. It’s not as long as Guardians of the Galaxy but that same downward direction.
- No spoilers about the ride, but just a tip on which line to choose. When you leave the room with all the storm troopers you can choose a line. We found that the line on the right goes a little faster.
- If you want a selfie with the Storm Troopers below you need to act fast. You just walk through this room really quickly. So be fast if you want to snap a photo. And plan to be one of the last ones in the room.
- Last tip PUT away your phone!!! When you get on the ride for the first time I recommend putting your phone away and taking it all in. There is so much going on with the ride you don’t want to miss it. Once you have been on it one time then you can take videos on your next visit. But trust me you don’t want to be in your phone it’s a total experience that you must SEE!
Also Galaxy’s Edge is NOT be open during Magic Morning or Extra Magic hours at Disneyland! The park will open to Magic Morning guests and they will be allowed to go on certain rides, but will not be able to join a boarding group until the park officially opens like everyone else. Currently they are allowing non-Magic Morning and EMH guests into the park early. But there is security up at the end of Main Street and you have to show your hotel key or your ticket with Magic Morning to go into Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
Hollywood Studios tips
Rise of the Resistance is the same attraction in both Hollywood Studios and Disneyland. There are a few differences in the process that I want to cover. Obviously the app for each park is different. Download the Walt Disney World app called the My Disney Experience app. You need it to get a boarding group. The process as explained above is the same to get a boarding group in the app. In order to even try you must have a park reservation that day for Hollywood Studios. There are two chances to try and get a boarding group. You can get on the app at 7 a.m. or try again at 1 p.m. if you don’t get one on your first try. The nice part about the new process is you don’t have to be in the park to try and get a boarding pass at 7 a.m. No matter where you are, hotel, house, parking lot wherever you just log onto the app a few minutes before 7 a.m. and get ready to click on that JOIN BOARDING GROUP button as explained above. If you don’t get a boarding group at 7 a.m. then in order to try for one at 1 p.m. you DO have to be inside Hollywood Studios.
Frequently Asked Questions below?
What if I don’t have a smart phone?
If you don’t have the app you can still join a boarding group. Look for signage near Splash Mountain and Buzz Lightyear or ask cast members. A boarding group may be obtained with your park ticket. But if you have a phone and can download the app this will be the fastest option.
Am I guaranteed to go on the ride if I have a boarding pass?
No you are not guaranteed. It just depends on if the ride has and break downs, how fast they move people through the queue and stuff like that. So just keep watching the app to see what boarding group they are on and hopefully you get to ride.
How long will they be doing the boarding group system for Rise of the Resistance?
We don’t know at this time. If I had to guess it will be for many months. It’s the best way to manage the crowds. It allows you to freedom to do other things while you wait instead of standing in a line for hours. When this process changes I will update this post, so bookmark it to reference for later.
Can you be at Disney California Adventure and join a boarding group?
No, your ticket must be scanned in at Disneyland in order to join a boarding group. Once you have been assigned a boarding group you’re free to come and go until your boarding group is called.
Can you leave Disneyland and go to DCA or somewhere until your boarding group is called?
Yes once you have your boarding group you can go wherever you want to wait. You could even go back to your hotel.
If I join a boarding group then can I still get a FastPass for another ride?
Yes the FastPass system is not connected to the the boarding group. The boarding groups are separate. After you secure a boarding group you can start getting a FastPass.
Does it cost to use the app to get a boarding pass?
No, you are not using MaxPass (which does cost) to get a boarding pass. You are just using the app to join a boarding group. It’s Disney’s way of saving your place in line. This is free to do.
Can I go in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge without a boarding group?
Yes anyone can go in the land. You can walk around, eat and even ride the other attraction Millennium Falcon Smuggler’s Run
Can you use MaxPass to get a FastPass for this ride?
No, there is no FastPass for this attraction so you can’t use MaxPass. You only use the app to get a boarding group and this is free in the app.
If I have a child who can’t ride what do we do?
You will use the Rider switch option. Check in with the cast member at the ride entrance and tell them you want to utilize rider switch. Your group will ride while one person stays back with the child. Then once they are done with the ride you will go to the entrance, scan your ticket and get on the ride with minimal wait time.
Is DAS offered for this ride?
Yes you must join a boarding group after you enter the park just like everyone else. Then once your boarding group is called you can go to any guest services kiosk to get a return time.
Can you pick the time for your boarding group?
No you are assigned a group, not even a time. They are assigned in the order you join a group in the app. You will only be give a boarding group number not a time to return. You can watch in the app to see what boarding group number they are on to get any idea of when your group might be called. Once you get your push notification you have 2 hours to get over to the ride.
If multiple people in your group are trying to join a boarding group can you all get one?
No, once someone in your group joins a boarding group for your group then the others will get an error message that says “You’re already in a boarding group.”
Can you ride the attraction more than once in one day?
No, at this time you are only allowed on the ride one time per day.
Do you think the ride is scary for kids?
Most of the ride is action packed and you’re moving around so much there’s not time to be scared. If your child fits the height requirement I feel like they will be fine. There are a few scenes with Kylo Ren but it happens so fast and I don’t think your child will be frightened but more startled. But you keep moving and there’s so much action they’ll soon forget. If you’re concerned you can find videos of the ride all over online to watch beforehand.
Do annual passholders get any advantages?
No, everyone has the same chances to try and get in a boarding group when the park opens.
Do you still need to make a reservation to get into Oga’s Cantina? to make a light saber? or build a droid?
Reservations are highly recommended for Oga’s Cantina, Droid Depot and Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers and can be made up to 60 days in advance. You can also make reservations within the Disneyland app.
How do you know if there are any boarding groups left?
There will be signs out once all the boarding groups are gone. The app will also tell you there are no more boarding groups at this time.
I will not be sharing any spoilers of the ride. I avoided them because I wanted to experience it for myself. So I am doing the same for you. If you really want to see the ride it’s all over online. I hope you find these tips helpful.
