How do you join the virtual queue and get a boarding group for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland or Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World? Here is your complete guide for Rise of the Resistance with step by step on how to join the virtual queue. This post includes tips and tricks that apply to the attraction on both coasts plus a FAQ’s section. The process has changed on both coasts and I’ve included the NEW times to get a boarding group and how! You don’t have to be in the parks to try and join the virtual queue. Read all about the new process below. And there were some changes made September 9, 2021 so I’ve updated this post to reflect.
Virtual queue: How to join the Rise of the Resistance
There are now TWO chances to join the virtual queue and get a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance. First try at 7 a.m. and then at 12 p.m. if you didn’t get one earlier.
- Guests with a valid ticket and theme park reservation who will start their day at Disneyland park will be able to access the virtual queue system and check for an available boarding group starting at 7 a.m. on the day of their park reservation from the comfort of your home, hotel room or wherever. Guests will need to have their park tickets linked to their Disney account.
- To access the second virtual queue at 12 p.m., guests must have a valid ticket and park reservation, and have entered Disneyland or Disney California Adventure with a Park Hopper ticket by noon. Guests beginning their day at Disney California Adventure Park may then enter Disneyland park with their Park Hopper ticket after 1 p.m. for their boarding group.
Rise of the Resistance (ROTR) opened Jan 17, 2020 at Disneyland. If you want to go on this ride you have to get a boarding group (a virtual line queue). Down below I will go step by step how to secure a boarding group. If you don’t get in a boarding group you can’t ride unless you want to pay an extra fee. For a fee you can purchase through Disney Genie+ coming to Disneyland soon. Read more about how that on this post. For Walt Disney World guests read the Hollywood Studios section further down for additional tips that apply to that park only.
Download the Disneyland app!
First step you must download the official Disneyland app. Do this before you arrive and create an account if you don’t already have one. Next scan your park tickets into the app for everyone in your party. Then have everyone else link all the tickets in their device on the app too. This is the only way to ensure the same boarding group for everyone in your party. Link all your tickets before your trip. See further below how to link tickets in the app if you need help. If you want to remove anyone from your app or unlink them you have to call Guest Services or use the Chat feature in the app. You can’t remove or unlink tickets yourself in the app.
Helpful tips to get a boarding group!
Now from anywhere your hotel, house etc. you can try and get a boarding group in the app. First make sure you have the latest version of the Disneyland app. Close out of all the other apps on your phone. Make sure you’re on reliable Wifi (not all hotels have the best). Log into the app around 6:50 a.m. and on the home screen find virtual queue as shown in the photo below. Click “Join Virtual Queue.”
Next you will be asked to “Confirm Your Party” click on the blue button and follow the instructions. This is where you double check that everyone you want to go on the ride with you is included in your group. Click “Change Party” to add or remove anyone as needed. Do all of this and get ready for the count down at 6:59 a.m.
Note: the 7:00 a.m. boarding groups are only for guests starting their day in Disneyland. And you can only try if you have a ticket and reservation for the day. From here, it’s kind of like the lottery, a game of chance. Whoever has the fastest fingers and secures a boarding group faster gets on the ride. Have the screen below ready and open in the app.
At 6:59 a.m. use a clock to count down the seconds. You can use a world clock (just google world clock if you don’t have something with seconds) but have a second hand counting down. Have someone count down the seconds and at 6:59 and 59 seconds refresh the screen or click the Refresh button. It all goes very quickly at this point. Right in the same spot where you clicked Refresh just keep clicking. You’ll see a blue “Join Virtual Queue” button. Don’t stop to read anything on the screen just click that blue button as fast as you can. And hopefully this is what you see next in the app, your boarding group number and an approximate time you have to wait. There has been conflicting information on whether everyone in your party should try to get a boarding group or if just one person should try. Each time I have tried to get a boarding group I have been successful. And each time we always have multiple phones trying to join. We are all logged into our own separate Disney accounts, but have each other tickets linked in our Disney app. I figure the more phones that are trying the greater our chances. I have heard from so many people that had multiple people in their group try and they were successful as well. I will leave that choice up to you. Every mobile device that is trying must have all the tickets linked to it. So make sure you add all tickets to all devices in advance.
How to link multiple tickets to your Disneyland app?
To link other tickets in your app go to the 3 lines in the bottom right corner of the app on the home screen. This is what it looks like in the app. Now find Tickets and Passes in the top left corner as shown in the photo above. Click on the PLUS symbol in the top right hand corner. Now tap on the barcode symbol that says “Link Tickets & Passes.” Now scan the bar code of the ticket you want to add or simply enter the numbers at the bottom of the screen. Voila you have added the ticket to your account! If you have tickets in your app for people that will not be with you on the day you’re trying to get a boarding group, don’t worry. The virtual queue only gives you people who have a reservation for the park the day you’re going.
Virtual queue now what?
Once you have been assigned to a boarding group, which is really a virtual queue it’s not a physical line, then you can enjoy the rest of Disneyland. You can even hop over to DCA if you have a park hopper ticket (after 1 pm at this time) or go back to your hotel until it’s your turn to experience Rise of the Resistance.
You will receive a push notification in the official Disneyland app when your boarding group is up.
After you are notified that it’s your boarding groups time you will have 1 hour to make your way to the ride. No need to hop out of a line you’re currently in. The app will tell you what time you have to return to board the ride.
What if I didn’t get a boarding group at 7:00 a.m.?
Unlike before the parks closed, there is now another chance to join the virtual queue. There is now a second opportunity to try and get a boarding group at noon. In order to try you must be scanned into either Disneyland or DCA and try again for a boarding group. You can only try and join at 12 p.m. if you weren’t able to get one at 7 a.m. In other words you can only ride once per day.
- Height restriction 40 in or taller
- DAS is offered, you must join a boarding group after you enter the park just like everyone else. Then once your boarding group is called you can go to any guest services kiosk to get a return time.
- Rider switch is available for this attraction. Tell the cast member when you enter the line you would like to utilize this option and they will help you.
- There is NO single rider at this time for ROTR.
- Expectant mothers should not ride.
- If you get motion sickness on rides like Star Tours, Smugglers Run or Flight of Passage (in Animal Kingdom) don’t worry you will be fine on this ride. I normally get a little nauseous but I was fine on this new attraction.
- There is a short drop on the ride. It happens so quickly and there’s so much going on to distract you. It’s not as long as Guardians of the Galaxy but that same downward direction.
- No spoilers about the ride, but just a tip on which line to choose. When you leave the room with all the storm troopers you can choose a line. We found that the line on the right goes a little faster.
- This ride is not just for Star Wars fans! You don’t have to know anything about the movies to enjoy the thrill of the ride.
- If you want a selfie with the Storm Troopers below you need to act fast. You just walk through this room really quickly. So be fast if you want to snap a photo. And plan to be one of the last ones in the room.
- Last tip PUT away your phone!!! When you get on the ride for the first time I recommend putting your phone away and taking it all in. There is so much going on with the ride you don’t want to miss it. Once you have been on it one time then you can take videos on your next visit. But trust me you don’t want to be in your phone it’s a total experience that you must SEE!
Note: this paragraph doesn’t apply under current Disneyland updated rules. Also Galaxy’s Edge is NOT be open during Magic Morning or Extra Magic hours at Disneyland! The park will open to Magic Morning guests and they will be allowed to go on certain rides, but will not be able to join a boarding group until the park officially opens like everyone else. Currently they are allowing non-Magic Morning and EMH guests into the park early. But there is security up at the end of Main Street and you have to show your hotel key or your ticket with Magic Morning to go into Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
Hollywood Studios tips
Rise of the Resistance is the same attraction in both Hollywood Studios and Disneyland. There are a few differences in the process that I want to cover. Obviously the app for each park is different. Download the Walt Disney World app called the My Disney Experience app. You need it to get a boarding group. The process as explained above is the same to get a boarding group in the app. In order to even try you must have a park reservation that day for Hollywood Studios. There are two chances to try and get a boarding group. You can get on the app at 7 a.m. or try again at 1 p.m. if you don’t get one on your first try. The nice part about the new process is you don’t have to be in the park to try and get a boarding pass at 7 a.m. No matter where you are, hotel, house, parking lot wherever you just log onto the app a few minutes before 7 a.m. and get ready to click on that JOIN BOARDING GROUP button as explained above. If you don’t get a boarding group at 7 a.m. then in order to try for one at 1 p.m. you DO have to be inside Hollywood Studios.
Frequently Asked Questions below?
What if I don’t have a smart phone?
If you don’t have the app you can still join a boarding group. Look for guest services kiosks and ask a cast member for help. A boarding group may be obtained with your park ticket. But if you have a phone and can download the app this will be the fastest option.
Am I guaranteed to go on the ride if I have a boarding pass?
No you are not guaranteed. It just depends on if the ride has and break downs, how fast they move people through the queue and stuff like that. So just keep watching the app to see what boarding group they are on and hopefully you get to ride.
How long will they be doing the boarding group system for Rise of the Resistance?
We don’t know at this time. It’s the best way to manage the crowds. It allows you to freedom to do other things while you wait instead of standing in a line for hours. When this process changes I will update this post, so bookmark it to reference for later.
Can you leave Disneyland and go to DCA or somewhere until your boarding group is called?
Yes once you have your boarding group you can go wherever you want to wait. You could even go back to your hotel.
Can I go in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge without a boarding group?
Yes anyone can go in the land. You can walk around, eat and even ride the other attraction Millennium Falcon Smuggler’s Run
If I have a child who can’t ride what do we do?
You will use the Rider switch option. Check in with the cast member at the ride entrance and tell them you want to utilize rider switch. Your group will ride while one person stays back with the child. Then once they are done with the ride you will go to the entrance, scan your ticket and get on the ride with minimal wait time.
Is DAS offered for this ride?
Yes you must join a boarding group after you enter the park just like everyone else. Then once your boarding group is called you can go to any guest services kiosk to get a return time.
Can you pick the time for your boarding group?
No you are assigned a group, not even a time. They are assigned in the order you join a group in the app. You will only be give a boarding group number not a time to return. You can watch in the app to see what boarding group number they are on to get any idea of when your group might be called. Once you get your push notification you have 1 hour to get over to the ride.
If multiple people in your group are trying to join a boarding group can you all get one?
No, once someone in your group joins a boarding group for your group then the others will get an error message that says “You’re already in a boarding group.”
Can you ride the attraction more than once in one day?
No, at this time you are only allowed on the ride one time per day.
Do you think the ride is scary for kids?
Most of the ride is action packed and you’re moving around so much there’s not time to be scared. If your child fits the height requirement I feel like they will be fine. There are a few scenes with Kylo Ren but it happens so fast and I don’t think your child will be frightened but more startled. But you keep moving and there’s so much action they’ll soon forget. If you’re concerned you can find videos of the ride all over online to watch beforehand.
Do you still need to make a reservation to get into Oga’s Cantina? to make a light saber? or build a droid?
Reservations are highly recommended for Oga’s Cantina, Droid Depot and Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers and can be made up to 60 days in advance. You can also make reservations within the Disneyland app. Oga’s Cantina reopens June 17th.
I hope you find these tips helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck, May the Force be With You!!!
